Sunnywood local park

    “Alas! I lost my pearl of old!
    I pine with heart-pain unforgot;
    Down through my arbour grass it rolled,
    My own pearl, precious, without spot.”

    Sunnywood Local Park demonstrates the power of narrative to shape landscape and link public and private realms together. The 14thcentury poem ‘Pearl’ is translated into a journey, with curving, scalloped pathways guiding visitors through a landscape that unfolds like a story. The theme progresses into the adjacent development to extend the experience. Preserved mature black walnuts and a rare butternut tree are incorporated into the park’s structure, providing ecological and microclimatic benefits.

    The park formalizes previously critical missing connections between Sunnywood Crescent, Yonge Street, Rosewater Street, and Roosevelt Drive with safe and seamless pedestrian and cycling links. Multi-generational recreation, including children’s play areas and an adult fitness zone, encourages physical activity and social interaction.

    Durable, City-approved materials, pathways designed for snow removal and maintenance, and provisions for a potential roadway extension ensure long-term functionality. By weaving storytelling, ecology, recreation, and connectivity, Sunnywood Local Park delivers a distinctive, engaging, and meaningful public landscape that strengthens and enriches the neighbourhood.

    The park was delivered as part of above-base park improvements for parkland dedication, which allowed for more coordination with the design and construction of the adjacent development.
